All England badminton 2024

Well done to Indonesia for winning 2 titles this year. One is a defending champion. Summaries below. Click on the pink links to see more.

wd. A big upset from Malaysia pair on the Chinese top seed. But the Malaysian did not manage to win the next round and lost to the Japanese 4th ranked pair. Shida did well to enter final meeting the Koreans. They lost to Baek and Lee.

xd. A dream final for top China pair vs Japanese pair. The chinese won it. 

md. The top seed indian pair was upset by Maulana and Fikri. Aaron and Soh did well to beat them in Qtr final. The top Indonesian defending champion did well to beat the Top Taipei pair in Semis who beat the Chinese young pair earlier in tough qtr final. Alfian and Ardianto did well to regain their title they won last year by beating the Malaysians.

ws. A lot of drama here. ASY did well to enter semis but was beaten by Yamaguchi. The rallies were brutal. TTY also did well to beat HBJ who gave a valiant fight even though she was injured. Carolina Marin did very well to beat CYF in 2 games with her awesome speed. In the final, Marin won the match after Yama gave up with a hip injury. Hope it is not too serious. Now we have 5 contenders for the Olympics. Marin, ASY, Yama, CYF and TTY.

ms. Another upset for Viktor again. This time to Ginting who has never beaten him for a long while. There was a controversy about the net tapping from Ginting where Viktor was making a whole lot of noise. LZJ had a good run vs NKL and LKY but lost narrowly to Sen. It is a case of wild power and over confident. In the final, Jojo won by beating Ginting. Jojo also beat SYQ after an injury call. It seems that Jojo have some luck in winning tournaments just like last year. Credit to Jojo for beating Vitid earlier.

French Open 2024

Congratulation to the winners. This is a S750 event before the All England.

xd. The Thai top pair did well to beat the Top seed from china in qtr finals. But lost to the Korean World Champ in semis. In the final, Feng and Huang did well to beat the Koreans WC. It is an upset.

wd. Matsuyama and pretty face Shida did well to enter final beating the koreans. But the Top chinese pair prevails. 

ws. Yamaguchi did well to make a come back beating CYF in semis. A close one. She had a shin injury before this. ASY also did well to beat TTY in semis. TTY was leading and the Olympic errors and nerve came back to haunt her. In the final, ASY dominated well. Yama looks a little heavy. Need to loose some weights. If Yama and ASY are free from injury, these will be the 2 main contenders. Their fitness is unmatched. Sindhu has been trying hard to make a comeback with Prakash as advisor.

ms. Wang Tzu Wei did well to dispose Top Seed Viktor in 2nd round. Vitid did well to beat Sen in semis. Sen did well to beat LKY. Chico did well to beat Antonsen. SYQ did well to beat Vitid in the final.

md. The top indian pair did very well as the topseed to win the title beating the surprising Taipei pair. Aaron and Soh lost to Koreans.

All England next... many are worried about injuries. It's the Olympic year.

India Open 2024 S750

India Open. Congratulations to all the winners. Quite a balanced event. Click on the links to see the results and videos.

xd. Thailand came back into this tournament with a vengeance after losing to Singapore in Malaysia Open. They beat the Japanese team who won last week Malaysian Open.

wd. Japan Matsumoto and Nagahara did well to win their 1st tournament of the year beating the weaker chinese pair.

ws. ASY had to pull out due to knee injuries. Not looking good for her for the coming olympics. Many ws are still recovering from injuries. eg. yama, okuhara, marin, sindhu. Chen Yu Fei did well to enter final but still cannot stop TTY who was in red hot form. At the moment, TTY and CYF will be the front runner for the Olympics.

md. A lot of drama in this event. Liang and Wang the no 1 seed lost to the Thai pair in the early round. Aaron and Soh did well to beat China Ou and Liu. Unfortunately in the semi finals, Aaron's right eye was hit by the shuttle and that caused them to lost momentum in the 2nd game. They lost in 2 sets. The Korean pair Seo and Kim did well to beat the top Japanese pair. They also managed to beat the favourite local pair in the final. Their performance was fantastic. They held on to the small margin lead all the way in the 3rd set over coming the pressure from the local Indian pair. Kudos. Now there are 4 big contenders. China, Japan, Korea and India. Malaysia, Indonesia and Denmark are outsiders for the Olympics.

ms. Notable players like Viktor, Antonsen and LKY did not play in this tournament. Lee Cheuk Yiu from HongKong surprisingly did well beating big players with the likes of Vitid, Ginting and Naraoka. Lzj did well to beat Jojo but lost to Naraoka in stamina. SYQ did very well beating Pranoy in semis and also using his experience to win the tournament beating LCY.

Next tournament is Indonesia Masters.

Malaysia Open 2024

Congratulations to all the 1st time winners. This is a S1000 big event. The 1st tournament of the year. It is also the Olympic year.

XD. Top seed was upset by Korean Kim and Jeong. Singapore did well to beat Thailand in Qtr final. Good money for them. Yuta and Higa did well to beat the Korean in the final. They are also lucky that the Chinese lost in the earlier rounds.

WD. In short, China juniors did very well to enter final. Malaysia and the rest of the seeds were not doing well.

WS. Yamaguchi trying to make a comeback and only managed to get into qtr final. TTY did very well in beating CYF. ASY beat China Zhang in 3 games. In the final, TTY did numerous error by playing risky shots. This caused her to make mistakes by pushing or smashing the shots out. I bet her coach did not inform her to play 'margin of error' strategy where it is safer to aim the shots 1 feet inside the line. ASY was lucky to win it. The front runners at the moment for OG is ASY, TTY and CYF. The 4th can be either Yama, Marin or Sindhu.

MD. It was a fitting semifinals for this tournament. China did well to beat Japan in semis and India managed to beat Korea. India did well to take the 1st game. In the second game, the chinese step it up and managed to win the other 2 games. A fitting win for the World Ranked no. 1

MS. The local malaysian players lost again in the 1st round. LZJ lost to LGZ. NTY was injured when playing Koki. SYQ did very well to beat top seed Viktor in 3 games. His netting was superb in the semifinals. Viktor did not get the chance to smash much. This is how you should play with tall players. Another way is to make sure that the shots go high up and make the opponent move around.

Antonsen was in great form disposing Taipei in 2 games. In the final, Antonsen must have read SYQ's game by dominating the front net shots. SYQ also looks tired from the 3 games played earlier.

HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2023 - Hangzhou

Congratulations to all the winners. Big Money. Few surprises. Click on the yellow links to see the video highlights. Malaysian Open next in January. S1000.

xd. Zheng and Huang did well to win in the final again. Earlier matches we saw Malaysian pair beating Japan pair for the 1st time in their career.

wd. China did well to win it by beating the surging korean pair.

ws. This is a big surprise to see TTY winning it. She is 29 years old and defying the odds by beating ASY in the semi finals and Marin in the finals. It's a shame we haven't seen Yamaguchi returning from her injuries. ASY also not 100% recovered. So, the Olympics is open for the time being. Anyone can win it as long as they are injury free.

md. Aaron and Soh dissappointed again because they lost in all their matches. The Indian top pair also did not participate in this event. The indonesians also did not do well. Korean world champ did well to beat the WR1 home favourites in 2 games. Perhaps too much pressure for China. Expectation was too high at home.

ms. Viktor lost to SYQ in the round robin game. Ginting looked promising but did not qualify for the semis. Viktor had his revenge in the final and pocketed a cool sum of money for Christmas. This is his record 5th title. He has elevated himself to legend status.

LI-NING CHINA MASTERS 2023

Congratulations to the winners of  the S1000 event. Big money. The big event WTF is next.

xd. Zheng and Huang did well again to beat their arch world champion rival Seo and Chae in a dominating fashion. Straight sets.

wd. Fukushima and Hirota did well to beat the Chinese top seed Chen and Jia in 3 tough games. However, Shida and Matsuyama did well to win it. This is their biggest win. A morale booster.

ws. Nozomi did well to beat Tunjung who won last week's Japan Masters. Too tired perhaps. In the finals, CYF did well to beat Han Yue who gave a WO.

md. He and Ren who won Japan Masters last week did not manage to beat the world number one from India. Liang and Wang did well to reach the final beating the India pair in a close encounter. Exciting 21-19 rubber games.

ms. Viktor pulled out due to injury. LKY got a mental block vs ginting again. LZJ lost tamely to Nishimoto. In the final, Naraoka did well to win this big event.

Japan masters 2023

Well done to the winners. 

xd. Zheng and Huang managed to beat their compatriot in the final.

ws. Tunjung did very well to beat Chen YF. The score seems lopsided and suspicious. 21 12, 21 12. This is her biggest victory to date. Well done.

In earlier rounds, An SY tried to make a comeback from  injury but still cannot beat CYF who qualified for the finals. CYF seems to have the magic to beat Marin all the time. TTY gave a WO to Zhang who lost to Tunjung in semis.

wd. Slightly more exciting with rubber games.

md. He and Re managed to upset Liu and Ou.

In earlier rounds, Aaron and Soh lost in 2 games to Koga and Saito but they lost to Liu and Ou who went to the finals beating Teo and Ong.

ms. Viktor did well to beat SYQ in 2 sets. Quite close. Viktor form looks good.

In the earlier rounds. Ng Tze Yong met Viktor and did well to pull him to 3 games. So did Jojo.

Antonsen did well to beat Naraoka in 2 games but lost to upcoming Kobayashi in 3 games.

The resurging momota who won the Korean masters did very well to beat Gemke in 3 games but lost tamely to SYQ. Probably too tired. This means momota has not fully returned yet.

Chou TC did very well to beat Pranoy in 3 games and then beat Koki. But SYQ got the upper hand on CTC in the semis.

Hylo Open and Korea Masters 2023

These are smaller tournaments. Congratulations to all the winners. Everyone was tired after French Open. Click on the yellow link below to see other winners.

Chou Tien Chen did well to win the Hylo Open beating LCY from Hong Kong. He is the record holder for S300 event with the most wins till today. Zhang from USA also did well after coming back from injuries.

In Korea Masters, LZJ decided to skip because of a small operations. He was supposed to meet Momota. Ironically, Momota did well to win this tournament beating compatriot Koki in the final. A resurgence perhaps?

A morale booster win for both for the upcoming Japan Masters 2023.

French Open 2023

Well done to the winners.

Jonathan Christie win is a surprise His 1st s750. Very well done beating Li Shi Feng from behind. He also beat Loh Kean Yew.

Li Shi Feng did well to beat LZJ who managed to avenge on WHY in the 1st round. Not easy beating 2 chinese. Viktor retired again. NTY is now 0 5 vs LSF.

Chen Yu Fei did well to beat the aging TTY. Danish MD got their amazing 6th title of the year.

VICTOR Denmark Open 2023

Well done to all the winners. This is a s750 event and there's a lot of money in it. Well done to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik for winning their 1st world tour title. After so so so long.... lol. Now the pressure is on LKY to win it. They need to thank the Indian pair for not playing.

Summaries below.

xd. Zheng and Huang did well to enter final and also managed to beat the world champion in semis 22 20 rubber game. Feng and Huang Dong Ping did better by winning the title. 26 24 rubber game. Very close.

wd. Chen and Jia did well to win it. Over powering the Japanese. I think only Korean can match them and they did not play.

ws. Sindhu did well to beat Tunjung. Marin did well to beat TTY. Aging. Marin did well again to beat Sindhu. Marin was great in mental game. However, Chen Yu Fei did well to beat Marin the the final. CYF beaten Marin in the last 3 meetings. ASY and Yamaguchi did not play.

ms. Viktor gave a walkover to LZJ. Lzj did well to beat Nishimoto and LCY.  Weng Hong Yang did well to beat Ginting and SYQ. He is on form and managed to beat lzj easily. He lost in 2nd round to Anton in the previous tournament. MS is wide open in Olympics with the exception of Viktor who seems to have injuries issues. Again, its victor's court. Shuttles also tends to be faster. 466kmh smash is crazy by lzj.

md. Fikri and Malauna did well to beat top seed Alfian and Ardianto.  Malaysian did well to beat denmark in semis. In the final, malaysia broke their jinx by winning the tournament. Well done.

Next tournament is s750 French Open.

CLASH OF CLANS Arctic Open 2023 (Finland)

This is a warm up tournament to the coming Denmark and French open. It is only a s500 event. Well done to all the 1st time winners.

Summaries.

xd. Only notable mention is the Malaysian pair beating the 2nd seed Dechapol and Sapsiree in 2 games. Then the Chinese took over.

wd. The topseed from Japan lost to China in semis. And they beat the Thai pair in the final.

ws. Tai Tzu Ying the top seed lost to Thai Chochuwong. And she lost to Han Yue from China in semis. Sindhu struggled against the Vietnamese in an epic battle. Sindhu almost lost in 2. Wang from China outlast Sindhu in semis. Han Yue won her 1st tournament.

md. Ahsan and Setiawan lost to Anders and Kim in semis. Danish also did well against Tpe pair. Teo and Ong was a dissappointment. Man and  Tee did well to enter final but lost to the Danish pair. Too experienced.

ms. Lzj continued with his fine form beating Chico in early rounds. Also beat Leong JH who was injured. He also managed to beat Antonsen in semis who was also injured. A little bit of luck is with him. Antonsen had a tough 3 setters vs Koki. Ng Tze Yong did well to brush the seeded CTC in 2 games. He also beat china Lu in 2 games to enter semis. NTY again beat Tsuneyama in semis. Quite credible wins. In the final, LZJ was in good form and managed to beat NTY easily. Head to Head is on lzj side. Next tournament is going to be a tough one in the 2nd round for both finalist. At least they got some precious qualifying points in this tournament.

Asian Games 2024 Badminton individual event. (Hangzhou)

From my opinion, this Asian Games is not a major event because it is not a worldwide event and it is not inclusive. We are talking about Denmark and the rest of the Europe teams are not involved. For an event to be considered MAJOR, it needs to be INCLUSIVE worldwide.

Congratulations to the 1st time winners.

Summaries.

1st round big match was between Lee Zii Jia vs Ng Kar Long. LZJ got his revenge this time 2 1.

In 2nd round Chou Tien Chen sent defending champion Jojo packing with 2 0. Jojo seems to have the luck eventhough he is not on form. He managed to win HongKong Open and went into the Final of the Japan Open. Very lucky with the draw indeed.

Ng Tze Yong also beat Loh Kean Yew and it is a big loss from LKY considering NTY was recovering form sickness. Too many mistakes.

Round 16.

Lee Zii Jia seems to get his form back earlier than expected by beating the recent world champion Vitidsarn 2 1.

Tai Tzu Ying surprisingly lost to Ohori from Japan in ws.

Qtr finals.

Lee and Wang from Taiwan beat top seed Alfian and Ardian again.

Lzj vs Pranoy was very exciting because Lzj got 2 match points and he did not convert. Pranoy's back was troubling him a lot and Lzj did not manage to finish him off. However, given the intensity of the match, it seems that Lzj is back in form. At least the point was respectable.

Li Shi Feng seems to be in good form beating Ginting 2 0.

Naraoka beat NTY 2 0.

The epic match was between Aaron/Soh vs China twin towers. The match was very close and had many rallies. Malaysia won in this epic battle.

Semi finals.

India did well to dispose Malaysia 2 0. Probably Malaysia was too tired.

The Korean md pair Choi and Kim did well to beat Taiwan 2 0.

Li sf beat the tired Pranoy easily.

Finals.

China xd did well to retain the title vs Japan.

wd, China did well to retain their title vs Koreans.

md. India did well to beat the Koreans in the final.

ms. Lsf did well to beat SYQ in the final.

ws, It was an epic battle because ASY was having knee problem after winning g1. CYF managed to win g2. And in g3, cyf herself got into trouble with her fitness and she lost. ASY is truly remarkable player and she will be the clear title winner in OG if she is healthy. Unless Yamaguchi regains her form and fitness. 

The rest of the events are wide open.😎

Asian Games 2024 Badminton team event.

This event was held in HangZhou, China. Well done to the winners.

Summaries.

Mens event.

Malaysia met Korea in the 1st round. The biggest surprise was that both the mens singles from Malaysia lost to the Koreans who are ranked much lower.

Aaron and Soh salvaged 1 point for Malaysia. They are the most consistent player at the moment for Malaysia. They managed to enter at least qtr finals in most events.

HongKong beat Thailand 3 2. Japan beat Singapore 3 0. Lky lost again.

Surprisingly, Korea again beat Indonesia in quarterfinals. Jojo lost and Ginting won.

In semifinals, India beat Korea 3 2. China beat Japan 3 1.

For finals, China escaped because Pranoy was injured. China managed to make a comeback from behind to win 3 2. Sen beat SYQ in 1st sgl.

Ladies event

China beat Japan 3 1 in semifinals and Korea beat Thailand 3 1. Yamaguchi was injured and did not play.

Korea did very well in the final beating China 3 0. A total humiliation on the host team.
